The Concept

Silent Signal: A Wearable for Inclusive Applause Applause is a feeling as much as a sound — a shared moment of celebration, appreciation, and connection. But for deaf and hard of hearing communities, that moment has always lived in the sound, not the gesture. This project changes that.

Clap in Light is a pair of wearable felt gloves embedded with conductive tape that complete a circuit every time your hands meet in a clap. No sound. No microcontroller. No code. Just the physics of touch — and a burst of light.

When you clap, you glow.

How It Works

Strips of conductive tape are positioned on the palm of each glove so that when both hands come together in a clapping motion, they make electrical contact and complete a simple circuit. That circuit powers a filament LED that light up instantly, turning every silent clap into a visible flash of celebration.

The build requires no soldering, no programming, and no electronics experience — just felt, conductive tape, a small battery, and I used a filament LED. It is one of the most accessible electronics projects you can make, and one of the most meaningful.

Why It Matters

Jazz hands — the Deaf community's form of visual applause — are a beautiful tradition. This project is a love letter to that idea, translated into something you can build and wear. Whether you're in a classroom, a performance space, or a community gathering, Clap in Light makes applause something everyone in the room can experience together. It's also a perfect entry point for teaching wearable electronics in inclusive and accessible contexts — no prior skills required, and the impact is immediate and joyful.
